WonScout (Won-Buddhism Scouts) is an exploration
within the practice of Won-Buddhism. Won
means ¡°empty circle¡± in Korean; this icon
symbolizes the nature of all Buddhas, sages,
and saints. This also symbolizes our true
nature, which is originally calm and bright.
WonScout has started in 1975 to recognize
the scouts who practice Won-Buddhism. The
actual activity of Won-Buddhism Scouting
was initiated by Rev. Duckyong Kim in Jeju
Island in Korea in 1985. Since then, the
insightful youth programs have been actively
developed; they integrate the spirit of
scouting and the mind/body practice of Won-Buddhism,
and thus bringing Korean and eastern culture
to the world events.
Currently, there are about 250 Won-Buddhist
scout leaders and 600 young scouts. They
practice scouting within the mind/body practice,
deepening the understanding of self and
the truth. In addition
to these registered numbers, more than 30,000
scouts have been exposed to Wonscouts¡¯ spiritual
activities through the World Jamboree and
Asian-Pacific Jamborees since 1991. Some
of those scouts have kept in contact and
reunion, deepening the practice of Won-Buddhism
scouting through the follow up participation
in the World Jamborees in Korea, Holland,
Chile, and Thailand.
